In memory of the SS Tanais.
SS Tanais a German cargo ship sunk on the night of 9th June, 1944 northeast of Heraklion by British submarine HMS Vivid en route to Piraeus. Was carrying 265 Jews from Chania as well as Christian resistance fighters and Italian prisoners nearly all perished. The cargo ship was previously sunk at Souda Bay in May 1941 was lifted and repaired and was back in service by 1943.
